The picturesque Heritage Town of Abbeyleix on the N8 Cork/Dublin route was described in 182GE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
6 by J. M. Brewer, the famous travel writer, as one of the most pleasing villages in Leinster with each cottage having a useful garden.

This planned estate town was the brainchild of the 2nd Viscount de Vesci who deemed the Oldtown of Abbeyleix to be unsuitable for his tenents, it being close to the river Nore and prone to flooding. He chose a slightly elevated site away from the river and built his vision of what a town should be.
